The emergence of the Hohensalzburg Fortress

Archbishop Gebhard built the Hohensalzburg fortress during the Investiture Controversy in 1077 as a bulwark against enemy attacks. The fortress was expanded and improved several times over the years, especially under Archbishops Leonhard von Keutschach and Paris Lodron, who made the building what we see today. It was used as the residence of the archbishops and as a defensive structure, but was never conquered by enemy troops.

Hohensalzburg Fortress is an impressive example of medieval fortress architecture. It covers an area of more than 30,000 square metres and features a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Among the most remarkable structures is the magnificent Prince's Hall, once used as a banqueting hall and later as a theatre. The golden Salzburg Bull, a huge mechanical organ built in 1502, is another highlight.

In addition to the historical buildings, there are three museums: the Fortress Museum, the Puppet Museum and the Rainer Regiment Museum. You can also visit the castle dungeon, the fortifications and the medieval blast furnace. In addition, concerts and events are held regularly, including the famous Salzburg Fortress Concert.
