The Salzburger Land region in Austria is home to some of the most beautiful natural phenomena in Europe. The Eisriesenwelt is undoubtedly one of these phenomena. It is a huge underground ice cave that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The Eisriesenwelt is the largest known ice cave in the world
With a total length of more than 42 kilometres, this cave is considered the longest continuous ice cave system on our planet. It is located in the Tennengebirge mountains near Werfen in the Austrian province of Salzburg.
The Eisriesenwelt was first discovered by a German mountaineer in 1912
In that year, a man named Anton Posselts ventured into the Tennengebirge mountains and came across the entrance to the cave. He followed the entrance and discovered the beauty of the place. He was so fascinated that in 1913 he initiated an expedition of German scientists to explore the cave.

Since its discovery, the Eisriesenwelt has established itself as one of Austria's most famous natural phenomena. There are many other ice caves around the world, but none of them can match the dimensions and unique charm of this cave.
The Eisriesenwelt is a popular destination for mountaineers, adventurers and photographers
This underground world full of breathtaking beauty offers a unique experience for every visitor. The various corridors and chambers offer an incomparable backdrop for photography enthusiasts or film lovers.
Climbers can test their strength on the nearby mountains and then explore the interior of this wonder. This cave also has a few surprises in store for adventurers: From mysterious lakes to impressive stalagmites, there's plenty to discover here!
The Ice Giant World is unique in that it comprises both underground and above-ground areas
In addition to its famous underground passages, the Eisriesenwelt is also home to an above-ground area called the “Ice Chapel”. It is a glacier that is located above the cave entrance and whose meltwater forms beautiful waterfalls in the summer months. The combination of underground and above-ground worlds makes this cave a very special place.

The structure of this ice cave is truly impressive: a massive mass of ice covers the inside of the cave, which makes it particularly spectacular in winter. There are a total of 3 zones in the cave with different temperatures, humidity and brightness.
This subdivision allows better organisation for groups of visitors and researchers looking for specific types of formations. The highest point within this structure is around 1,645 metres above sea level.
